With its slender trunk that can exceed 20 meters in height and its crown of pinnate leaves up to 5 meters long, the date tree is capable of transforming any garden, urbanization or public space. In addition, it produces edible dates in the warmer areas of the south and southeast of the peninsula.

In Mediflora, we have been growing date palms in our nursery in Elche for more than 30 years. We work with specimens of all sizes, from young seedlings to centennial date palms with curved trunks of great ornamental value. This guide contains everything you need to know to keep your date palm in perfect condition.

Varieties and ornamental forms of date palms

Phoenix dactylifera with straight trunk

The classic form of the date tree, with vertical trunk and symmetrical crown. Most commonly used in avenue alignments, monumental entrances and formal gardens. Main characteristics:

Height: 15-25 metros en ejemplares adultos

Trunk: diámetro de 30-50 cm, cubierto de restos de pecíolos (bases de hojas cortadas)

Corona: 20-40 hojas pinnadas de 3-5 metros de longitud

Growth: 30-50 cm al año en condiciones óptimas

Phoenix dactylifera with curved trunk

Specimens with curved or inclined trunks are the most valued pieces in signature landscaping. The curvature is natural, the result of years of growth under the influence of wind or competition with other specimens. At Mediflora we have curved date trees selected for their unique sculptural shape.

Phoenix dactylifera multistipitate

Some specimens develop several trunks from the base, creating a very spectacular group effect. They are used as a focal point in large gardens, traffic circles and accesses to housing developments.

Ideal growing conditions

Climate and location

The date palm needs heat and direct sun. It is the most resistant palm to cold of the large species, but it has its limits:

Exposure: pleno sol obligatorio.

Soil

Date palm is extremely tolerant of soil. It thrives in:

Sandy, clayey, calcareous, calcareous and even slightly saline soils

pH from 7 to 8.5 (typical alkaline soils of the Levante)

Poorly drained soils (tolerates temporary waterlogging better than other palms)

The only real requirement is depth: the roots of the date palm can descend more than 3 meters in search of water, so soils with rock or hard surface layer limit its development.

Irrigation

Despite its desert origin, the date palm responds very well to regular irrigation, especially in its early years:

Drip irrigation is the most efficient system: 4-6 drippers of 8 l/h distributed in a ring 50-80 cm from the trunk.

Date palm pruning

Leaf pruning

Pruning of date palms is limited to removing dry leaves and exhausted fruit clusters. Fundamental rules:

Only cut completely dry (brown) leaves. Yellowing leaves are still transferring nutrients to the plant.

Never remove more than one third of the crown in a single pruning.

Cut the petioles flush with the trunk with a disinfected tool.

Ideal time: late winter (February) or early fall (October).

Trunk cleaning

The remains of petioles covering the trunk can be removed for aesthetic reasons, leaving the trunk smooth and showing its characteristic rhomboidal texture. This operation is purely decorative and should be done carefully so as not to damage the stipe.

Pests and diseases of date palms

Frequent mistakes in the care of date palms

Date palm tree maintenance calendar

May–June: segundo tratamiento contra picudo. Inicio del riego regular de verano. Polinización manual si se desean dátiles

Julio-agosto: tercer tratamiento contra picudo. Riego constante. Recolección de dátiles en variedades tempranas

Septiembre-octubre: cuarto tratamiento contra picudo. Reducir riego gradualmente. A young specimen of 2-3 meters can cost from 150-300 euros, while an adult date tree with a trunk of 6-8 meters ranges between 1,500 and 5,000 euros. Centennial specimens with curved trunks, considered unique pieces, can exceed 10,000 euros. At Mediflora we offer personalized estimates according to the needs of each project.

</details>
<details class="faq-item">

Does the date palm give dates in Spain?

Yes, but only in the warmer areas of the southeastern peninsular (Elche, Murcia, Almeria, Alicante coast). In order to ripen correctly, dates need long summers with temperatures above 35 °C. In addition, male and female specimens are needed, since the date palm is dioecious. In cooler areas, the palm grows well but the fruits do not ripen.

</details>
<details class="faq-item">

How do I know if my palm tree has red palm weevil?

Initial symptoms are: central leaves that droop or fall, asymmetrical appearance of the crown, wet sawdust at the base of the leaves or on the trunk, and a characteristic bittersweet odor. In advanced stages, the bud collapses. If you detect any of these symptoms, contact a plant health specialist immediately.

</details>
<details class="faq-item">

Can I transplant an adult date palm?

Yes, the date palm is one of the palms that best tolerates transplanting, even in large specimens. The key is to perform the operation in spring or early summer (when the palm is active), maintain a root ball proportionate to the size of the trunk, and water abundantly during the first months after transplanting.

</details>
<details class="faq-item">

How long does a date palm live?

Under appropriate conditions, a date palm can live more than 200 years. In the Palmeral de Elche there are documented specimens of more than 300 years. Longevity depends fundamentally on the absence of lethal pests (red palm weevil) and that the bud - the only point of growth - does not suffer irreversible damage.

</details>

Date palms at Mediflora

On our catálogo de palmeras datileras encontrarás ejemplares de todos los tamaños y formas: tronco recto, curvado y multiestípite.
